I love the lawlessness of new modernism. To me, it’s freedom to design outside of boundaries, labels or rules. Combining elements from different periods, styles, worlds, we find harmony amongst seemingly disparate items.

A new construction on the North Shore of Long Island, Harbor Blues perfectly represents the ideal of new modernism. With the interior architecture unfinished, we had a blank slate upon which to make our own rules. The homeowners wanted to incorporate a variety of styles, from Early American Colonial to modern, accenting Mid-Century furniture, country rustic heirlooms and French antiques.

It was important to the clients for the home to feel young and stylish, yet classic and timeless. We designed the millwork, such as cabinetry, molding and paneling, to feel both historical and modern. Taking inspiration from the book Houses of the Founding Fathers, we streamlined the quintessential design motifs of yesteryear.

For the powder room, we modeled the vanity after an antique Biedermeier chest but with a modern slant. Ornamental wallpaper highlights and enshrouds the sleek vanity and sconces.

With Harbor Blues, we created a home that is crisp and modern while anchored in a timeless sense of history.
