  • A Modern Gem

I cherish the transformative nature of good design—its influence on people and their day-to-day lives. I strive to create spaces that are true reflections of those who live there. In doing so, the transformation is not only seen but more importantly, is felt.

In the case of A Modern Gem, the transformation was dramatic. The new design represents a complete break with the past. The homeowners of this classic Westchester bungalow wanted to do away with their über traditional interiors of nearly 20 years and create a space emblematic of them—a vibrant and artistic couple.

The clients wanted ‘modern, modern, modern.’ We referenced modern through the house’s 1920s roots, the 1950s and today. Our vision was to open up the space with fresh, soft colors, accented by rich, jewel tones, touching upon her jewelry designs. A modern photography collector, his art books were scattered throughout the house. We turned the dining room into the main library, providing a trove of conversation pieces for entertaining.

We replaced the boulder-like mantle with a clean, angular one that adds a sense of refinement and gives a nod to the home’s Art Deco past. In the master bath, we gave the cabinets a classic 1920s French ceruse finish, providing a timeless take on modern.

The transformation of A Modern Gem feels fresh, current, artistically interesting—it feels like the clients’ home.
